
Humboldt Foundation sponsors joint research with Harvard University

Prof. Marcella Alsan from Harvard University receives the Humboldt Research Award. Together with Prof. Dr. Jonas Schreyögg and Dr. Esra Bayindir from the Hamburg Center for Health Economics (HCHE) at the University of Hamburg, she will conduct research on inequalities in the German healthcare system as part of the funding.
The international research team at the HCHE will investigate the refugee movement of 2015/16 and its implications for the healthcare system and the quality of care. The cooperation project is due to start in the course of 2025.
Prof. Dr. Jonas Schreyögg, Professor of Management in Health Care at the University of Hamburg and Scientific Director of the HCHE: “This special funding and joint research gives us an invaluable opportunity for significant progress in health economic research and, beyond that, positive impulses for health care.”
With its award, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation honors leading researchers “whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and beyond and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge academic achievements.” The prize is endowed with 60,000 euros.
Marcella Alsan's innovative work as an applied microeconomist and infectious disease specialist is widely recognized in the scientific community. She has previously received the MacArthur Fellowship for her research on discrimination in the healthcare sector. In 2022, she was elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
