Prof. Daniel Wiesen speaks about altruism as a fundamental aspect of medical professionalism, a behavior, which is shaped in future physicians during their medical education. He studies the stability of patient-regarding altruism using data from a longitudinal behavioral experiment with German medical students (N=1,413 observations). He finds that patient-regarding altruism remains rather stable over time. However, he observes substantial between-subject heterogeneity which is largely due to a large unexplained variance component.
