Dr. Stefan Sliwa Ruiz from the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg is conducting a study investigating the impact of a large-scale exodus of migrant doctors in Brazil on public health. There were lasting restrictions on the care of chronic diseases, while service utilization for conditions requiring immediate care, such as infections, quickly recovered. Reductions in utilization did not translate into changes in health outcomes. Supply-side response and demand diversion helped mitigate major adverse repercussions for population health at the market level.
Dr. Stefan Sliwa Ruiz presents his findings on Mon, 3.11.2025 at 16.00 Hrs at the Research Seminar: "What Happens to Population Health When the Doctors Leave? Evidence from the Exit of Cuban Doctors in Brazil" at the Hamburg Center for Health Economics.
