As a joint research center of the University of Hamburg and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), we combine expertise in the economic and social sciences with medical expertise. With approximately 100 researchers, it is one of the largest health economics research institutions in Europe.

Our healthcare system is undergoing constant change—shaped by demographic trends and the continuous improvement of medical services. To help address the challenges of healthcare, we at the HCHE conduct research to find solutions to current and future issues. Our goal is to provide a multifaceted analysis of key health policy issues.

Healthcare spending continues to rise; areas such as long-term care, mental health, and quality of care are coming into sharper focus. The number of research questions continues to grow. Therefore, one of the HCHE’s key missions is to provide health economists with an excellent education for both academia and practice. National and European funding makes it possible to increase the number of doctoral students, while the HCHE’s own master’s program in Health Economics & Health Care Management lays the foundation for further (academic) careers.
