The evaluation of the genome sequencing model project pursuant to § 64e SGB V kicked off on 10 February 2026 at the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds (GKV-Spitzenverband) in Berlin. The Hamburg Center for Health Economics, together with the Medical University of Innsbruck and the University Hospital of Zurich, is providing scientific support for the five-year project, with a clear focus on patient-relevant benefits, reliable processes, and the question of long-term financial viability.
The model project for comprehensive diagnostics and therapy selection through genome sequencing in rare and oncological diseases was initiated by the Healthcare Development Act (Gesundheitsversorgungsweiterentwicklungsgesetz, "GVWG") in 2021. The evaluation includes an assessment of the data in accordance with the annex to the Genome Data Regulation on utilization and the care process, as well as on diagnoses, therapy recommendations, and patient-relevant benefits. It is also planned to carry out causal analyses with regard to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs based on SHI billing data. In addition, a survey of participating patients will be conducted to gain insight into their satisfaction with care and perceived changes in their health status.
