Is Physician Cost-Sharing an Alternative to Patient Cost-Sharing?

Can financial incentives for general practitioners, which regulate access to specialist care within a gatekeeper system, replace patient cost-sharing? Prof. Tobias Klein from Tilburg University shows in his study from the Netherlands: General practitioners care incentives reduce costs by 4.3%, primarily for less urgent specialist care. Patient co-payments are more effective: A small co-payment of 375 Euros per year reduced costs by 27.8% monthly and 10.4% annually, across all types of care.
