Many developed countries face shortages of labor supply. This trend is mostly due to population ageing, but recently also has been reinforced by increased preferences for shorter working hours. This problem is especially severe in health and long-term care markets, in which population ageing is predicted to increase demand at the same time. Shortages of labor supply in health and long-term care markets receive a lot public attention, because of their potential adverse consequences for patients. Thus, policy makers across the world need to develop strategies to make sure that in the future, labor supply in health and long-term care markets is high enough to meet the demand of services. This includes structural reforms that reduce the need for labor through coordination and ambulatory care.
